To help you make an informed decision, we've conducted a blind taste test of the top canned abalone brands (in our Private Kitchin).

We gathered a panel of experts to sample five of the most popular canned abalone brands. Each brand was tasted blind, meaning that the panellists did not know which brand they were tasting. The panellists were asked to rate each brand on a scale of one to five, with five being the highest score.

We did not reveal what the Brands were just known to them as Brand A to E.  The results of our blind taste test showed that Brand A was the clear winner, with an average score of 4.7 out of 5. Brand B came in second place with an average score of 4.3 out of 5, followed by Brand C with an average score of 4.2 out of 5. Brand D and Brand E both scored an average of 3.9 out of 5.

Our panellists praised Brand A for its tender texture and rich flavour. They also noted that it had a good balance between sweetness and saltiness. Brand B was praised for its firm texture and robust flavour, while Brand C was noted for its mild flavour and delicate texture.

Brand D was criticized for its overly salty flavour, while Brand E was noted for its lack of flavour. Overall, our panellists agreed that Brand A was the best-canned abalone brand.

Whether braised in a rich sauce, poached, stir-fried, or incorporated in broths, its ability to adapt to various cooking methods while maintaining its unique texture and flavour is exceptional. Traditional reunion dinners often feature abalone as a centerpiece, cooked in oyster sauce or paired with ingredients like ginseng, truffle, or mala spice, creating dishes that tantalize the taste buds.

The global appeal of abalone extends from Asia to the USA and beyond. Its preparation techniques vary widely, from Asian steaming and sautéing to Western styles like barbecue and broiling. Abalone pairs well with a multitude of ingredients, including broccoli, pineapple, and shrimp, allowing for creative dishes like abalone gumbo or salads.
